Kilvert & Forbes was originally created in 1976 when Quincy Market first opened its doors as the famous food colonnade.
At the time, founder John Kerry was practicing law, which he found to be “quite predictable and very boring”. So this chocolate lover and his friend and business partner K. Dunn Gifford opened the bakery and named it after their mothers, featuring family recipes. In 1982, Lt. Governor Kerry bought his partner’s shares of the business and sold them to Stanley and Linda Klein. A few years later, he sold his own shares to the Kleins. Even though Senator Kerry is no longer at Kilvert & Forbes, we hear that he still loves chocolate!
The Kleins owned and operated Kilvert & Forbes until July 2003, when the ice cream girls in Quincy Market decided to expand their dessert repertoire. Even though Carol Troxell and Sara Youngelson, owners of Steve’s Ice Cream and Slugger’s Dugout, can be found eating ice cream year-round, they know that not everyone enjoys a yummy frozen treat in the middle of a New England winter! According to Carol, they are very happy to be able to share their passion for chocolate year-round at the bakery. As best friends, Carol and Sara are always looking to change and improve their dessert shops, but they have been careful to preserve the success and tradition at Kilvert & Forbes. With the recent introduction of Maggie’s Sweets, the ice cream girls have continued Senator Kerry’s 25-year family tradition by incorporating some of their family’s favorite recipes. They hope that some of these special recipes will become your family’s favorites, too!
So…who’s Maggie? Well, owner Carol Troxell decided to combine her family’s tradition of delicious cookies and sweets with Kilvert & Forbes’ tradition of familiy recipes. Carol’s mom, Margaret, is the baker of the family and the creator of many of the recipes in our line of Maggie’s Sweets. This famous baker helped create President Clinton’s birthday cake, but is probably best known by friends and family for always having a plate of goodies around. As Maggie’s whole family will tell you, “Life is always a little sweeter after a whoopie pie or two!”
